Joke Books Verboten!

Posted in Humor~General at 8:01 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

I was watching the SMArts student arts TV show that Cleveland Comedy Kitchen and I created a few years ago.  We comics helped the students to create their own individual comedy bits for a show.  One the students asked where he could find ideas for his act.  Kitchen member JD Sidley told him to not use joke books.  “Just take things from your own life.  Talk about school, your favorite teacher, your least favorite teacher, your friends, your family.”

What’s so bad about joke books?  Joke books are impersonal.  Anyone can read a joke book, but few people can read it aloud.  What’s more funny is what is real for you.

Strength, Endurance, & Flexibility–and Cleanliness

Posted in Humor~General at 8:13 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

Three of the keystones of health are flexibility, strength, and endurance. If any of these is over-done, it weakens the others, and we are out of balance.  We are unhealthy.

Too much flexibility makes our joints unstable.  We need to have muscle strength to hold ourselves together.  But strength without flexibility limits our mobility.  And we need endurance in order to continue living, breathing, moving.

It’s the same with clean comedy.  Too much flexibility means we say everything that comes to our minds–whether it’s offensive, vulgar, or off-color.  We need some self-control:  the strength of our appropriateness-muscles lets us know our boundaries in certain situations.

But too much strength and control means we limit our creativity to only those things that are politically correct–and hence, not so funny.

Finally, we need endurance to continue to use our sense of humor–in a balanced way–in situations throughout our day.  When we can combine these three aspects into our comedy, we will always be healthy.  And funny–very, very funny!

“Get Your SHINE Together!” and get balanced!

The I-Ching of Change

Posted in Humor~General at 7:10 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

Just read an article by Dr. David Clippinger about Chinese philosophy and healing.  Seems that there is a universal principle that the “forms of all things are in a state of perpetual motion and change.”  Everything is subject to this “always turning round of yin and yang.”

How different this mindset is from our usual, Western thought.  We fight change, we resist it, we try to overcome it, we try to conquer it.

Rarely do we attempt to go with it.  To accept it, and let it take us where we need to go.

Comedy lets us into this flowing sea of change.  How?

Comedy disrupts our usual way of seeing things.

Comedy surprises us with new insights.

Comedy lets us have fun.

When we approach change with this mindset, change seems less threatening.  It might even be so fun that it heals us.

Around the Next Bend

Posted in Humor~General at 6:07 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

While watching Planet of the Apes marathon today, I thought of something for today’s Comedy Around the World.  The humans were climbing over the rocks and into crevices, trying to hide from the gorillas.  The humans kept running away, and eventually found a surprise:  They had stumbled onto (or into) Queensboro Plaza subway station, thousands of years into the future.

That scene reminded me (partly) of a trip to Eilat in Israel.  A twist of fate caused me to become a chaperon to a high school field trip to that mountainous region.  We spent all day climbing through, around, onto, and off of high rock formations.  Like those other humans, we also didn’t know what was around the next bend.  We just trusted our leader, trusted the people who went before us, and trusted ourselves to place our foot securely on whatever rock we needed.

Comedy is a lot like that.  It is a tradition whose leaders blazed a trail.  Whether it was breaking the rules of conformity like Andy Kaufman did, or bending the laws of vocabulary like George Carlin did.  Maybe your comedy leaders were like mine.  They were women who made being funny a women’s job, too:  Carol Burnett, Goldie Hawn, Lucille Ball, and Mae West (yes I know, that’s old school).

And just as we trust their track record, we trust the current comics who are not only performers, but commentators on our life-and-times.  They are the sounding board for dissent, for creative thought, and for unpopular (but clever) opinions.  We can learn from them–we can learn to listen to our own voice, too.

Finally, once we know our own story, our truth, we can create our own brand of humor from that.  It’s a story we believe in.  It’s a story that may be painful, but we can cull humor from it.  And that will always be funny, no matter how fast the gorillas are running.

Any Road Can Take You There

Posted in Humor~General at 4:35 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

I went running with the dogs today.  We (okay, I) had planned on running a certain path.  But, because of the knee-deep snow, we couldn’t even see “our” path.  We had to instead follow whatever snowmobile tracks there were in the vicinity.

This reminded me of how our sense of humor operates:

–Our sense of humor lets us enjoy our surroundings in a way that otherwise we couldn’t do.  Most people wouldn’t think of going outside to run in 30 degree weather.  They know that treadmills have been invented.  But for my dogs and me, today was a veritable heatwave.  (I only had to wear two layers of socks, and no toe warmers.)  I not only appreciated the warm weather, but I had fun watching the dogs as they played in the snow and fought over deer carcasses they found along the way.

–When we can laugh and take our situation lightly, we suffer less pain.  Our planned route became surprising a few miles into the run.  When the snowmobile tracks stopped, we had to resort to running through ankle-deep snow for about another mile.  But I was able to smile:  the lead dog turned around every few hundred yards to make sure the other dog and I were okay.

–If we utilize our innate sense of humor, we can have the agility necessary to bypass the obstacles that get in our way.  We may have the best plans in the world, but ultimately we are not in control of everything that could happen.  If we focus too much on doing things exactly as we had planned, we lose our flexibility and our agility.

So today, get your shoes (or in my case, hiking boots) on and, “Get Your SHINE Together!”, no matter where your trail leads you!
