While I was listening to the news on the radio, I heard President Obama joking at a media banquet. Now--I am all for people being entertaining. We all hate boring speakers. When someone is a funny speaker, they get our attention. They make us remember their points and their message. We like them! But they can become like the class clown.
Here's what I mean: Right after the news clip about the banquet there was another clip. Unemployment is 11 1/2 %. Double digit unemployment. In the United States. It is the highest rate since World War II!!
Somehow the joking and laughter wasn't as funny. Something was amiss. Just like when the class clown keeps us laughing but doesn't know when to quit. He (or she) doesn't seem to realize the teacher's annoyance. Or that we have stopped laughing. He (or she) isn't reading the audience. The context. The vibes.
I don't want Obama to stop joking and being humorous. Never! He is a wonderful (and free) advertisement for me and my own services. But now doesn't seem the time to see who can be the funniest speaker.
