The Achilles Heel
In 1997 something magnificent happened--I ran the New York City Marathon. And I met a great group of runners, volunteers, and inspirational moments while being part of the Achilles Track Club experience. Achilles Track Club was founded by Dick Traum, who was the first above-the-knee amputee to finish the New York City Marathon in the 1970's. He collected other disabled runners and inspired them to also compete in the marathon. His organization grew from New York City to places all over the world. His vision is to change the way the disabled are viewed and treated in their respective environments.
"Go Achilles!" is the newest book about the Achilles Track Club and Traum's vision. The 208 page coffee table book describes how the club began, and also highlights the the New York City chapter, Achilles Kids, and other offshoots from the original club.
