Musings on the place of humor and comedy in our daily lives--and other funny things by Trina Hess. Comments welcome!
Little Pink Houses

As promised, Comedy Around The World will be in Turkey all week.  But not until we first go somewhere else--Logan's Ferry, Pennsylvania, site of last night's comedy show.

After the show, one of the audience members came to the back of the room where some of the comics were standing around and talking.  The man told us how he appreciated that we mentioned the name of the town in our acts.  Even though some of the comics' comments were sarcastic, this person still thought they were funny.  They made him pay attention to the show, and made the show more personal to him.

That's what happens when we give people a message that relates to them--to their situation, location, interests and values.  Usually, my interaction with hecklers in the audience gets bigger laughs than my material I prepare in advance of the show.  That's because those comments are organic, personal, and--relevant.  Everyone in the audience shares in those comments and in that moment when they are spoken.  The entire audience helps in creating that particular humorous moment.  When it happens, it's MAGIC!

The man from the audience summed it up very uniquely.  He told us that if we wouldn't have mentioned the town, and it's location (high on a hill around many, many twists and turns; a former coal-mining town), the show wouldn't have been as interesting to him.

"I'm an architect," he told us.  "Not talking about this town and this area would feel like something was missing.  Like if someone built a southwest style house here on the hill.  It would look and feel out of place."

"Get Your SHINE Together!" is all about communicating like a comic:  succinct, with a human-touch, and with relevance.  What is your message?
