Pill Poppers
Speaking of different perspectives (like yesterday's blog entry), I spent the day with my friend Ozlem. She's from Cyprus--where they don't have pills for all your ills.
She mentioned that, "It's funny--here they tell you, 'Are you fat? Don't worry about it, take this pill and you will be half your size.' 'Are you depressed? Don't worry, take this pill you'll be happy.'"
How many times do I even notice these ads, much less pay attention to them? But when you're an outsider in the culture, everything stands out for you. It is noticeable, because it is so different from what you're used to. That makes it easier to make funny comments about all the new things you see.
Oz said it would be good for me to take a trip to Turkey. Why? The reason? "You are very white and you have colorful eyes." Forget about the ancient cultural relics there, the outstanding food and friendly people--just go, they need to see more pale people there. That is reason enough for me!
What is YOUR perspective? How funny is THAT? "Get Your SHINE Together!"
